Ecocorp Paraguay

ECOCORP is a Paraguayan joint venture, 66.6% owned by SilviCarbon.

SilviCarbon’s partner in EcoCorp is EFISA, a Paraguayan forestry services company focused on sustainable reforestation activities.

EcoCorp operates a nursery in Hernandarias and provides carbon advisory services to regional reforestation and agroforestry projects.

ECOCORP is also seeking opportunities to develop its own reforestation projects on degraded land.

Hernandarias Nursery

Tree nurseries play a key role in supporting large-scale reforestation projects, as they provide the seedlings that are planted to remove and store CO2 from the atmosphere.

The EcoCorp nursery in Hernandarias has an annual capacity of 12m seedlings which will facilitate the rapid expansion of reforestation activities in Paraguay.

The nursery specialises in developing native species as well as commercial species.

The foundation of forestry

Nurseries provide a controlled environment for seedlings in order to achieve optimal growth and development before they are transplanted to the project location.

Another role of nurseries is selective breeding to produce trees with the most desirable genetic make-up. Selective breeding can increase growth rates and survival rates of trees, increasing carbon sequestration per hectare by 2-3 times

The R&D that is achieved by nurseries is crucial for developing the forestry sector. These natural laboratories will help create resilient forests that efficiently capture and store CO2 for a long time.

Carbon Advisory

With the support of SilviCarbon’s carbon team, ECOCORP provides carbon advisory services to help regional projects to generate, market and monetise carbon removal certificates.

In particular, ECOCORP helps local landowners develop agroforestry and silvopasture models to allow existing agricultural practices to continue alongside reforestation projects, allowing for land restoration and optimising agricultural output.

In-House Project Development

Baapa restoration project

The Baapa Restoration Project aims to reforest and restore degraded agricultural land around the Mbaracayú Forest Natural Reserve in the Canindeyú Department in Paraguay.

Environmental benefits

The project has carefully selected a diverse mix of 12 native species to initiate restoration and create an ecosystem where biodiversity can flourish. Being located on the edge of Mbaracayú Forest Natural Reserve, the project serves as a buffer against illegal logging. The project contributes to natural restoration and climate change mitigation, targeting the sequestration of CO2 as the driver to rebuild the native ecosystem.

Social benefits

The project works closely with local and indigenous communities, providing socio-economic benefits by offering employment opportunities and taking a participatory approach that allows local stakeholders to be directly involved in the project development. This way the project maximises its impact on local communities, for example by preserving their access to natural resources and cultural heritage.

Partners

The Baapa Restoration Project is collaborating closely with respected local forestry organisations such as EFISA and local stakeholders, governmental entities, and private sector organizations. These organisations bring extensive expertise in native forest restoration, ensuring effective and contextually appropriate project activities and provide valuable knowledge on socio-economic issues and local community needs, aiding in fair and inclusive project implementation while minimising risks.
