SilviCarbon Agroforestry Laos

Restoring heavily degraded land through a large-scale agroforestry model designed for climate, people and long-term production.

Project overview

SilviCarbon Agroforestry Laos (SCALA) combines practical forestry and carbon project development in Khammouane and Saravane provinces. Its agroforestry model brings eucalyptus plantations into rice-growing landscapes, connecting restoration of degraded land with local livelihoods and sustainable wood production.

SCALA 2 is an expansion programme with a planned 31,500-hectare scale and a 4,696-hectare first phase. It proposes a mosaic of agroforestry, conservation areas and buffers, with unexploded ordnance clearance before plantation establishment.

Area targets and carbon estimates reflect the October 2024 planning basis. They remain distinct from completed planting, certification and issued credits.

Climate, nature and people

Climate and land

The programme aims to remove carbon through tree growth and restore productive use of degraded land. The carbon figure is an estimate, not an issued-credit total.

Agroforestry livelihoods

Intercropping and local employment diversify household income and support food production during plantation development.

Safer communities

Project-funded unexploded ordnance clearance helps transform hazardous land into areas that can be used more safely.

Sustainable production

Nursery operations, applied research and sustainably managed plantations are intended to supply veneer, plywood, sawmilling and pulp industries.

Our approach

SCALA uses a mosaic approach: productive plantation areas are combined with conservation areas, watercourse buffers and land retained for community use. Project planning is supported by free, prior and informed consent and continuing engagement with villages and authorities.

The forestry model links carbon finance with sustainable timber production so that restoration can be maintained over the long term. Monitoring, research and adaptive management are used to improve productivity while protecting environmental and social values.
